Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli, popularly known as KP Sharma Oli, is one of Nepal’s most well-known political leaders. He has served as the Prime Minister of Nepal three times, and he remains an important figure in the country’s politics. For many Nepalis, Oli represents both hope and controversy, as his leadership has seen big decisions as well as sharp criticism.
Early Life and Political Journey
Oli was born on 22 February 1952 in eastern Nepal. He entered politics at a young age, influenced by communist ideology. He joined the Communist Party of Nepal and became active during times when political movements in Nepal were often restricted. Because of his activities, he was jailed for many years during the partyless Panchayat system.
Rise to Power
Oli slowly rose through the ranks of Nepal’s leftist politics. His big break came in the 1990s, when Nepal restored democracy. He became a member of parliament and later held ministerial positions. Over the years, he developed a reputation for being bold, sometimes outspoken, and often controversial.
Tenure as Prime Minister
KP Sharma Oli became Prime Minister of Nepal for the first time in 2015, just after the country adopted a new constitution. His leadership came during very difficult times:
- The 2015 earthquake had destroyed large parts of Nepal. Oli had to lead recovery efforts.
- Nepal faced a border blockade, which led to shortages of fuel, medicines, and goods. Relations with India went through tense moments during this period.
He returned to power again in 2018 with strong support from his party, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist). This time, he promised stability and development. His government pushed for road building, infrastructure growth, and closer ties with China.
Achievements and Criticism
- Achievements: Oli is credited with pushing Nepal’s agenda of sovereignty, trying to strengthen national identity, and completing several infrastructure projects. He also promoted the use of hydropower and connectivity projects.
- Criticism: At the same time, his style of leadership was often called authoritarian. He faced criticism for mismanaging the COVID-19 pandemic, weakening democratic institutions, and clashing with leaders inside his own party. His government was also accused of being slow in providing services to common people.
Oli and India–Nepal Relations
For India, KP Sharma Oli is a very significant figure. During his tenure, relations between India and Nepal saw ups and downs. On one hand, he worked to maintain deep cultural and economic ties with India. On the other, disputes over borders (like the Kalapani-Limpiyadhura issue) created friction. Despite this, people-to-people ties between India and Nepal remained strong.
Current Role
Even after stepping down from the post of Prime Minister, Oli continues to be an important leader of the CPN-UML party. His speeches attract attention, and he still has a strong base of supporters who see him as a nationalist leader who can stand up to both India and China when required.
