Flood Situation Near Yamuna River: Delhi and Nearby Areas on High Alert

The water level of the Yamuna river has risen sharply after continuous heavy rainfall in northern India. The situation has created flood worries in Delhi, Haryana, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. Thousands of people living in low-lying areas near the river are facing difficulties, and authorities are keeping a close watch.

Yamuna Water Level Rising

At the Old Railway Bridge in Delhi, the water level of Yamuna has reached close to the danger mark of 205.33 meters. Reports from the Central Water Commission confirm that the river is swelling fast because of heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Water released from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana has added to the rise.

Low-Lying Areas Impacted

The rising water has entered several low-lying areas near the Yamuna floodplains. Families living in these places have been asked to evacuate. Relief camps have been set up in schools and community halls where people are provided with food, drinking water, and medical support.

In some parts of Delhi, especially near the riverbanks, waterlogging has disrupted traffic. Farmers are also worried about crop damage, as fields near the river are submerged.

Government and Rescue Operations

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on the ground. Teams with boats are helping in evacuations. Police and volunteers are also guiding people to safer shelters.

Chief Minister and local officials have appealed to citizens to avoid going near the river and to cooperate with evacuation orders. Special arrangements have been made to ensure that essential services like electricity and drinking water are not badly affected in nearby areas.

Why Floods Happen in Yamuna Every Year

Floods near the Yamuna are not new. Every monsoon, when there is heavy rain in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, large volumes of water flow down into the plains. The Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana controls this flow, but when water release is high, Delhi faces a flood-like situation.

Experts say that encroachment on floodplains, unplanned construction, and poor drainage systems in Delhi make the problem worse.

Impact on Daily Life

  • Traffic Disruptions: Key roads near ITO and other parts of central Delhi face waterlogging.
  • Homes Submerged: Families living in makeshift houses near the riverbanks are the worst hit.
  • Crops Damaged: Farmers in Haryana and western UP report losses in paddy and vegetable fields.
  • Health Concerns: Stagnant water raises the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.

Authorities Issue Safety Advice

Officials have urged people to:

  • Avoid bathing or washing clothes in the swollen river.
  • Stay away from riverbanks and bridges during heavy flow.
  • Cooperate with police and disaster response teams.
  • Keep important documents, medicines, and essentials in waterproof bags.

The flood situation near the Yamuna river is a serious challenge for Delhi and surrounding regions every monsoon. While the government is working on rescue and relief, long-term solutions like better drainage systems, stricter control on floodplain encroachment, and improved water management are needed to reduce the yearly crisis.

For now, all eyes are on the water levels. If the rains continue in the hills, the situation may get worse, and residents near the Yamuna must stay alert.
